Sport Pilot regulations for airmen certification are found in 14 CFR section 61. Sport Pilot rules are found in Subpart J.

Q - What is the first step I need to take to become a Sport Pilot?

A - You will need to obtain a Student Pilot certificate. You can obtain one from any FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) or from a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). To apply you will need to produce a government issued photo ID and be at least 16 years of age. You will need to be able to read, speak and write the English language. You will need to possess a valid driver's license or at least a third class airman's medical certificate. (Section 61.85)

Q - How many hours must I fly with an instructor to become a Sport Pilot with a Powered Parachute Rating?

A -To be eligible for a Sport Pilot certificate with a powered parachute endorsement, you will need to log a minimum of 10 hours of flight training (duel) and at least 2 hours of solo flight training in the areas of operation listed in Section 61.311. You must also meet the minimum training criteria listed in Section 61.313(g)

Q - When do I need to take my knowledge test?

A - It is recommended that you take the knowledge test after your solo cross-country and before your CFI sign off. However, you should begin study for the test from the first lesson.

Q - Should I get an endorsement for class B, C and D airspace?

A - If you have a need to fly in or around class B, C, or D airspace you should obtain the endorsement. The powered parachute can present traffic problems for air traffic controllers particularly for Bravo and Charlie airspace. Your aircraft will need a Mode C transponder for operations within 30 NM of class B, in class B and C airspace. Discuss your particular circumstances with your CFI.
